In September 2024, Kivalliq Alternative Energy (KAE) attended the Kivalliq Trade Show in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Dana May, Chris Lentz, and Malek Tawashy represented KAE alongside Blaine Chislett from Sakku Investments Corporation, using this opportunity to engage with community stakeholders, foster relationships, and advance the company’s renewable energy projects in the North.
The trip began with a warm welcome in Rankin Inlet on September 23. Dana, Chris, Malek, and Blaine joined local partners to set up KAE’s booth, where they shared information about the Ikayuut Solar and Energy Storage Project and discussed KAE’s broader renewable energy initiatives. That evening, the team enjoyed a traditional caribou dinner, hosted by Kevin Sanguin and his family, a perfect start to what would be a week filled with meaningful conversations and local culture.
The cultural celebration continued into the night with the Kivalliq Trade Show’s fashion show, showcasing modern Inuit designs, followed by an incredible performance by Indigenous music duo Twin Flames. This highlighted the importance of blending tradition with modern innovation—an idea that resonates deeply with KAE’s approach to renewable energy in the region.
On the second day, the team attended a series of speeches and panel discussions. One of the most rewarding moments came when John Main, the Minister responsible for Qulliq Energy Corporation, mentioned KAE’s Ikayuut project, showcasing how integral KAE’s work is to the North’s energy future. The rest of the day was spent on the trade show floor, engaging with local leaders, businesses, and community members, all interested in learning more about KAE’s projects.
The gala dinner that evening was a true community highlight, with the team participating in a lively auction and supporting local artisans through the purchase of unique, handmade goods.
The third day offered more chances to solidify relationships, particularly with Art Sateana, Communications Manager for the Kivalliq Inuit Association, who provided valuable feedback on improving KAE’s town hall presentations with interpreting tools to ensure all community members are involved. Later, a discussion with Darren Flynn, Senior Administrative Officer of Rankin Inlet, emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration as KAE's projects evolve.
Throughout the trip, Dana, Chris, Malek, and Blaine reinforced KAE’s commitment to fostering lasting partnerships with the communities they serve. Meetings with local leaders, such as Ernest Douglas, the new President of QEC, and Shawnee Kayuryuk, Baker Lake’s Economic Development Officer, demonstrated KAE’s dedication to building transparent and respectful relationships, while also advancing sustainable energy solutions.
The trade show closed with a strong sense of optimism. KAE’s team left Rankin Inlet having deepened their connection with the Kivalliq region and feeling energized about the next steps in their renewable energy projects. This trip was another step forward in KAE’s mission to create impactful, community-driven energy solutions in the North.
