Northern Energy Capital (NEC) is committed to empowering communities in their transition to a clean energy future. As part of this commitment, Malek Tawashy, NEC’s CEO, recently participated in the ARENA Canada program, an initiative focused on renewable energy development in northern communities, particularly highlighting the crucial role of Indigenous self-governance, ownership and collaboration with utility companies.

The program provided valuable insights into the complexities and opportunities surrounding the historic reliance on imported fossil fuels, and pathways to transition to a renewable energy future in these regions. A key takeaway was the critical importance of community ownership and self-determination for the success of these projects. Indigenous governance plays a significant role in shaping energy project development, and utility companies must adapt to the unique challenges and opportunities of integrating renewable energy sources into remote communities.

Energizing Visit to the Inukjuak Hydro Project

A highlight of the trip was a visit to the newly commissioned Inukjuak Hydro project. This project exemplifies the positive outcomes achievable through community engagement and the potential for locally produced renewable energy to enhance the lives of individuals in remote communities. The significant investment by Hydro Quebec in upgrading the community's distribution network to support this new clean energy source further underscores the shift from imported fossil fuels to local, sustainable alternatives.

“The site visit to the recently commissioned Inukjuak Hydro project was truly inspiring and energizing. What’s more is the impressive investment and effort undertaken by Hydro Quebec to upgrade the community’s distribution network to support the use of this new source of clean energy for additional uses including space heating and hot water heating; further advancing the shift from imported fossil fuels to locally produced clean energy.” - Malek Tawashy

Malek had the opportunity to share his expertise during the program, presenting on "Developing and Integrating a Community Supported Project." The exchange of knowledge and experiences among participants emphasized the importance of collaboration between communities, governments, utilities, and developers in creating sustainable energy solutions.
